Jurassic 5 will drop their fourth album, 'Feedback,' on July 25, with a guest appearance from Dave Matthews on the lead single, 'Work It Out.' The L.A. hip-hop crew say the evolution of Matthews from fan and friend to musical collaborator was very organic.
"Dave said he'd like for us to do a couple of tour dates with him," says J5's Soup. "We also did this Vote for Change thing that Dave was a part of, so we vibed on that level too ."
While other songs on the album are more reminiscent of vintage J5, Soup says the band wanted to mix things up with the single. "I didn't want you to hear a certain song like 'Radio' and expect, 'Oh yeah, they're going to come with that.' Because that's an easy way to write us off."
Still, as veterans of the music industry, the group is wary of that "damned if they do, damned if they don't" mentality. "People are going to say, 'Oh, man, y'all didn't stick to the old-school vibe. Y'all selling out,'" says Soup. "But if we would've stuck to the old-school thing then it would've been, 'Oh, they ain't trying to branch out.'"
