Prince 'Butters' Up Stars in N.Y.

Prince's late-night show at New York restaurant Butter on Friday attracted a gaggle of stars, including Paris Hilton, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Nas and Kelis.

The intimate gig was split into two sets, with the second leaning heavily on songs from his latest LP '3121,' and included a cover of the classic Fleetwood Mac sleep around anthem 'The Chain.' Among the night's guest spots were the singer's latest female vocalist discovery, Tamar, and the Roots' ?uestlove on drums.

Friday's gig put an exclamation point on a week that also included Prince's scene-stealing turn at a Maceo Parker gig in Brooklyn, where the Purple One surprised fans and Parker by emerging and launching into 'Get On the Boat,' also from '3121.'

From the NPG report...

Dear Prince,

Can I be your lyric page turner at your shows? Because obviously that is the best place to be -- front and center and my face in the face of your guitar. Please. Those strings must have DNA entertwined on those chords the way you played today. Looking all fine in a magenta-purple-suit-with-orange-stitching-and-silk-high-collared-shirt-to-match. Like we didnt notice! Even tho I could go through the THREE HOUR SET with song by song list, there will be others to praise those funky intimate gems that you sprung on the crowd. Oh, yes, the crowd. Did you see them? Well you probably didn't see (brace yourself for some name dropping here) P Diddy dressed in a sharp grey suit conducting himself gentlmanly, or Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton playing high school word games. There were quite a few people in the small space oddly reminiscient of 3121. Candles all mood enhancing and lighting invoking some bedroom eyes. If there were a little more wattage you would've seen Jay Z and Beyonce in a black and white ensemble partying with Kellis and Nas, the uber cool couple (Kellis sported a tres cool gold grill on her bottom teeth with earrings to match) or Scarlett Johanssen who came in late and had to squeeze in between Petra Namacova (the Sports Illustrated model) and Brian Grazer (The DaVinci Code producer). I know you saw ?uestlove of the Roots since you invited him up for an extended jam.

Yes Prince. The bodies lined up in a sycnhopated groove even tolerated BET's Stephen Hill's rendition of PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC WHITE BOY! Ah yes, even Maxwell had to look twice at that scene.

When you put on a show like that you can't be too surprised to find the resume of Paige Turner in between JOY IN REPETITION and ANOTHERLOVERHOLEINURHEAD.

Thanks for an incredible night.

Respectfully,
VB
