Elton John Wants to Get His Hip-Hop On

That whole Elton John-Eminem Grammy duet in 2001 may have been much more than a publicity stunt or act to make nice. It seems the veteran British rocker is following the yellow brick road all the way to Compton as he tells Rolling Stone of his desire to record a hip-hop album with one of the genre's icons, Dr. Dre.

"I want to work with Pharrell, Timbaland, Snoop, Kanye, Eminem and just see what happens," John says in the Sept. 7 issue. "It may be a disaster, it could be fantastic, but you don't know until you try."

He also reveals that he's a fan of Blackstreet's 'No Diggity' and 2Pac's 'California Love.'

Puff daddy (I refuse to lower my intelligence level by referring to him by his alias) has a clothing line, and perfume. Fifty cent has a clothing line, bottled water, and baby lotion. Every rapper the masses know of is a sellout (I can think of only two who aren't at the moment). Now Elton John wants to rap. There was a time when rap was poetry, a valid form of expression, before Fifty cent got famous with DR. Seus rhymes like "Clickety clankclickety clankmoney in the piggy bank." Before Missy Elliot spewed complete garbage like "Ra-ta-ta-ta-ta I need a cup of Watah(purposley mis-prounonciating "water" because she can't write a decent rhyme)". If you live in top 40 and corporate radio, rap is dead to rights. Elton John, K-fed, and Richard Simmons combined, can't dig this blade deeper in hip-hops wrists. Top 40 is a cancer. Rap is on it's dying breath.

Don't give up, look beyond radio and MTV, find local and independent talent, don't fit in with the masses as they sink to they're death, rise above and show independent thought and intelligence.

As a loyal Elton John fan for over 35 years, I am disapointed by his next musical venture. I personally feel that hip-hop and rap should be left to those who don't have Elton's musical ability.

love elton john am a huge fan but i think elton john trying to sing hiphop is like a cowboy trying to sing regae it just dont fit.... love elton because hes a passionate singer n a great rocker , why ruin something good ,this is a very bad idea...i agree all hiphop is is a bunch of noise,am not a fan too many talented people are wated by singing weird songs. example mariah carey loved her singing normal songs but then she started singing with all these rappers n doing some bad sucky music. keep doing the music we love that you are now elton, please say no to hiphop..its a bunch of noise n krap n i would hate to see you lower your standards by doing bad music...say it isnt so elton.

If Elton thinks he wants to try a new route in music , then so be it . I think if he really wants to try to do real music then sit him down with B B King or Dr john of New Orleans and play to the real rythm of life.

I am sitting here laughing my butt off at some of these comments...especially the negative ones. All they go to show is how marrow minded and judgmental people can be. I also think that it is wonderful how some of you are self appointed music gurus and have the audacity to tell me what "real music" is. Your like or dislike of a genre of music does not classify it as real music or not. Then again, using your line of thinking, R&B and hip-hop are considered "real music" by Elton John if he is considering using some of the beats for his CD. So if your beloved Mr. Fantastic himself thinks that they are "real music" then no more needs to be said. As far as all of these Elton rapping and going over to hip hop comments...the man did not say that he is going to sell his piano and become a rapper. He stated that he likes the beats and wants to see what he can do with them. So can Elton do hip-hop? I guess we will see. And all this BS about it ruining his career. Please. Besides, if the man is truly as fantastic as people say he is, his career would not end due to one not-so-good CD. The man should be commended for being brave enough to step outside of the the little genre box that musicians get placed in. Tim McGraw and Nelly, Ying Yang twins and Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Jay-Z and Linkin Park, Aerosmith and Run DMC all paired up and stepped out of that box and the results were wondeful. I would *love* to see what he comes up with. Other artists should only be so brave. By the way, I am a 28 year old black female who now listens to eveything from Dr. Dre and Ying Yang twins to Chopin to Elton John to Trace Adkins. Maybe if you took the time to listen to more than the five records, three 8-track cartridges, and four cassettes that you have at home you *might* find that there is a whole world of music that you are missing out on.
