As the buzz continues to build around Drake, some people are having a hard time waiting for his finished product. One company in particular decided they couldn't wait for the Toronto native's debut album and decided to put one together and released it themselves. According to reports, Canadian Money Entertainment released 'The Girls Love Drake' on iTunes on May 28, in an attempt to profit off the rapper-turned-actor's popularity. The album includes songs from Drake's free mixtape 'So Far Gone,' which features sampled music that his camp is trying to clear before they can start selling the album.
"This is a straight bootleg. We are behind promoting records at radio, but haven't sold it," Drake's manager Al Branch said. "iTunes' position is that they are [a] store and they stock everything. They have a waiver and as long as people sign it and are responsible for the product they submit, then they go for it." Branch fired off a cease and desist letter to the company and they have since removed the album from their site. However the album is still available on Amazon.com and Rhapsody, which Branch is working on getting removed.
Had it not been confirmed as an un-official release, the album would have entered the Billboard Hot 200 charts at No. 101. Additionally, 'The Girls Love Drake' hit No. 16 on the Digital Albums charts and No. 1 on the Heatseekers List.
Drake's massive popularity and strong internet following landed him in the middle of a $2 million label bidding war. He is said to be close to signing a deal with Universal Motown Records.
As a member of Lil Wayne's Young Money crew, the 22-year-old's notoriety was boosted even higher after he was spotted smooching Rihanna in a New York City bowling alley/lounge. Since their alleged rendezvous, Drake has been busy performing all over the country. His music has received a stamp of approval from hip-hop heavyweights Jay-Z and Kanye West.
No date has been set for his official album release.
