'Soul Train' is coming to a big screen near you. Warner Bros. has put plans in motion to turn the hit 80s dance show into a feature film. Although no release date has been disclosed as of yet, the movie will be written by Malcolm Spellman, with Darryl Porter, Aaron Geller and 'Soul Train' creator and host Don Cornelius on board as producers.Spellman talked to Variety magazine about his dance-filled feature, which covers an important period in hip-hop dance culture. "All of the hip-hop street dances you see today were born during that time period and were first seen on that show, and I remember doing all of them when I was a kid," Spellman said.
The film will follow lead character, "Protag," around 1980s Los Angeles as he tries to finagle his dance skills into a permanent gig on the Soul Train Tour. "This guy is a serious popper, with street edge," Spellman revealed about the script. "And he wants to get on that tour, with the hottest of the hot."
'Soul Train' premiered in 1971 and aired its final show in 2006 after an 1,117 episode run. During its 35-year history, there were several spin-offs of the legendary show including the 'Soul Train Music Awards,' which premiered in 1987, 'The Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards,' which premiered in 1995 and the 'Soul Train Christmas Starfest,' which premiered in 1998. Don Cornelius hosted the program from 1971 to 1993 and finally sold the show to MadVision Entertainment in 2008.
