Officials in Malaysia are barring their Muslim citizens from attending an upcoming Black Eyed Peas concert because the performance is sponsored by an alcohol company. The government enforced the ban upon learning that the Black Eyed Peas appearance would commemorate the 250th anniversary of Guiness Alcohol. "The party is only open to non-Muslims aged 18 years and above," said a representative for the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture. "Muslims cannot attend. Non-Muslims can go and have fun." Initially, the government almost canceled the entire concert because the country does not allow alcohol companies to promote events. They made an exception in light of a potential increase in tourism.
In recent years several artists have run into roadblocks while adhering to Malaysia's strict Islamic rules. Singers Beyonce, Rihanna and Gwen Stefani were all instructed to tone down provocative clothing and performance while doing shows in the country.
Fergie, Will.I.Am and the rest of the Peas are scheduled to perform Sept. 25 in the country's capital Kuala Lumpur despite the recent impediment.
