After some debate about the timing and content sensitivity of their drug-intervention reality show, 'So Far Gone,' MTV has decided to move forward with plans to air the program, which stars the late DJ AM. AM -- real name, Adam Goldstein, was found dead in his New York City apartment, just three days after MTV wrapped filming on eight episodes of the show. The reality series documents Goldstein as he enlists the help of an addiction specialist to counsel others through their battles with drugs, while still recovering from his own addiction problem.
The show was originally scheduled for an Oct. 5 premiere date, but after AM's untimely passing, MTV networks said that no decisions had been made on whether on not the show would air as planned. A toxicology report explaining the cause of death for the Philadelphia native has not yet been released, but with evidence at the scene pointing to a drug overdose, the credibility of Goldstein's role in the show came into question.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, MTV has been in talks with the Goldstein family about setting an appropriate run date for the show, and despite the tragic circumstances surrounding his death, some believe that AM's role in 'So Far Gone,' will help to project the necessity of anti-drug counseling.
Before he passed away AM tweeted that he had wrapped filming on the show, and seemed excited to premiere the project.

DJ AM's story is a sad one. No matter how smart you think you are, how talented you may be, how great things seem to be going in your life, drugs will screw with your life - and can ice you for good.
Not that I expect anyone will, but I hope SOMEone learns from this man's untimely death.

While this man's death is sad for his family, I'm not sure he can be used as an example to others struggling with addiction. He is not a hero or a role model. His is the tragic and common ending to a life filled with drugs. Would his death only show the hopelessness of the fight to those trying to get clean?

I think it would show people if you dont get straight and most importantly stay straight death is the end result. Some luck out and spend the rest of their lives in prison, but hey the reality is death would be easier than prison for the rest of life for many. Although it is a sad end for him it may help others to see death is a great possibility if they dont give up the drugs.

I think it would be more of a statement not to even start to those thinking about it, then one of staying stopped to those already entangled in the fight with drugs. Either way it's a sad yet all to common ending for a young mans life. It's almost a blessing compared to the ones I've seen go down that are still alive.

addiction is something that is with you forever. you can have years go by and think its out of your life and then it sneaks in and before you know it it is your life. honestly as a now non using drug addict (opiates) i realize the only thing that stops a long run of use is running out of money, thats why these people with unlimited money, not to say a dj was bill gates but he can go and go and unfortunatley by the time hes done going hes gone. i dont listen to house music, im sure theres a real talent to it, this kid had the same thing that god forbid will one day effect just about everyone reading this one way or another . just be grateful if you arent one who has that addictive gene or whatever it is. i know i will live with this the rest of my life, but i also know i dont have to ever suffer its consequences if i just do certain things to prevent it. sounds easy, dont find the drugs dont buy the drugs and dont take them but somehow they getin your head and unless you have been there you cant understand rip adam

You are the only person I've seen on the messages board telling the truth about addiction. Sadly enough it kills and alot of people die every day leaving young infants, children, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandparents, and many friends that wonder why no one cared enough to help there loved ones. I formed a fund to help bury people whom have died from drug overdoes and other things that are from real life. I write books to make the money to do this because alot of people can't afford to bury their loved ones after such a great loss. (M.A.R.C.S.) is an acronym for murder, abuse, rape, chronical illness, suicide. My fund is not known publicly because I'am not considered a not - for- profit organization. I sell poetry , books, t-shirts to raise monies to help bury people. This is mot any thing new. I've been helping bury victims of abuse since 1990. M.A.R.C.S. motto: M.A.R.C.S. knows no boundries; M.A.R.C.S. doesn't discriminate.

Probably a bad idea to ask a recovering addict to hang around with users all day just to film an 8-episode series... probably what did the poor guy in! He was an addict, not a doctor or counselor! First thing recovering addicts should do is avoid that scene - sheesh!

A wasted death, sad. I will say some very insightful blogs regarding addictions. I would say his chosen profession was the biggest downfall to kicking his problem. Kind of like the alchoholic Bar tender

I am going to tell you guys the same thing that I tell my own kids. Because I have been there and because I have done that; it makes me the perfect person to tell you not to do it. End of story.
DJ AM is the perfect person to tell people not to do drugs, look at the example he left. Do you want to die too?

I just want to know why MTV would chose to air a show that is hypocrytical. He is "helping" addicts, but then overdoses himself...and they are airing this show...why? The guy had a second chance to live after a plane crash and blew it because he couldn't get help for a drug addiction. I am sure the guy who DID die on the plane would have killed for that chance DJ AM took for granted. I am sure the guys girlfriend and newborn would have loved to have their husband/father back as well. Nice MTV! honor the guy who wasted the second chance!
