Chicago rapper Bump J was sentenced to 10-years in prison yesterday, for his part in a 2007 bank robbery. The rapper, whose real name is Terrence Boykin, plead guilty to the charge and was able to strike a plea deal with prosecutors allotting him the minimum sentence. Boykin was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm for which he received a seven-year sentence plus 37-months for the robbery. He will receive credit for time served. Following the 2007 robbery Boykin eluded authorities for a year until he was detained after a routine traffic stop. He was identified as one of the two suspects involved in the crime and faced a life sentence for threatening one of the bank employees with a gun.
Prosecutors were able to pinpoint Boykin as one of the main suspects through a surveillance video and witness testimony. He made off with $100,000 in the robbery and became the target of a nationwide search put on by the Chicago F.B.I.
Boykin, a former drug dealer who grew up on Chicago's Southside, was formerly signed to Atlantic Records and has worked with Kanye West. His rap name was inspired by 1930s New York gangster, Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson.
