After fighting to have Atlanta's latest Trap star-turned-rapper Gucci Mane dropped from an upcoming concert, North Carolina A&T have decided to simply remove their name and financial support from the event. The homecoming concert, which is set to take place Oct. 31, drew criticism from school officials and community leaders when they got wind that Mr. Brrr himself would be headlining. The school's administrators are not a fan of Gucci's "violence and gang-centered" lyrics and tried to pull the plug on the concert, but it appears that the show must go on, according to A&T's Chancellor, Dr. Harold Martin.
"While we have benefited from this internal review, we find ourselves with limited options. We must respect the rights of our partners; honor our legal obligations; while remaining steadfast to our principles," Martin wrote in a statement. "We have agreed with the promoter to remove the name of North Carolina A&T State University from the event. While this does not absolve us of our connection to the event, it allows us, within our limited options, to take a moral stand while we simultaneously honor our legal obligations."
While some students agree that Gucci Mane may not have been the most appropriate choice as performer for a school-related event, others feel the institution is being a bit self-righteous and possibly contradictory. "I don't understand why it makes a difference... why they have their name on there or not because they've had gang-affiliated members before," sophomore Kavaughn Robinson told DigTriad.com.
Approximately 6,000 tickets with the school's name printed on them have already been sold for the concert.
