Check the stands at any important Yankees game and you're likely to find Jay-Z lounging in the most expensive seats. I mean, according to his own rhymes, he made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can. Well, now NYC's finest sporting organization has adopted the Hov, Kanye, Rihanna collaboration 'Run This Town' as their official theme song on the quest for their 27th World Series ring. In the lead-up to postseason play, New York station Z100 spoofed the summer jam with new Yankee-centric lyrics and it immediately blew up.
"Winning games like it's not fair," read the doctored lyrics. "The Yankees rule so we don't care/ 26 World Series rings/ Time to pop some more champagne/ Victory's within the mile/ Almost there, don't give up now/ Only thing that's on my mind/ The Yanks gonna run this town tonight."
Z100 is hoping that Jay-Z will lend his actual voice to the remix -- a move that just might bring even more people onboard to the phenomenon. So far in the playoffs, Alex Rodriguez's at-bat music has been 'Already Home' and Derek Jeter is using 'Empire State of Mind' -- both off 'Blueprint 3.' Hova could have yet another monopoly on his hands by the end of the year.
"The song is not false bravado, because the Yankees are really good this year," said Z100 executive producer and lyric writer David Brody in an interview with the Daily News. "Fans were buzzing over the spoof, repeatedly requesting to hear it on the air - the only place it's available. The responses have been tremendous. Obviously, Yankee fever is big right now."
