Roc Raida New York Tribute to Feature World's Best DJs

Roc Raida The world's greatest turntablists are preparing to gather in New York next week to celebrate the legacy of Grand Master Roc Raida, who unexpectedly died on September 19.

The October 22 'Tribute at the Tableturns' event will take place at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in Times Square. Roc Raida's fellow X-Ecutioners and X-Men will be there, as well as legendary DJ's Craze, A-Trak, Z-Trip, DJ Scratch, DJ Dummy, I-Dee, Babu, J.Rocc, Shortkut, Rhettmatic, Slyce, Roli Rho, current DMC champ Shiftee and a performance by D.I.T.C. Proceeds will benefit Roc Raida's surviving family.

The tribute is a reunion of sorts for 'Tableturns,' an open NYC turntable event held monthly established in 1997 by Doug "Sugarcuts" Cohen. Cohen, who ended the event in 1999, organized Roc Raida's tribute, "as a way to properly pay tribute to a legend," he told The Boombox, "a guy with enormous influence on my life and on so many DJ's and music lovers around the world."

Roc Raida's tragic accidental death has triggered a wave of support and sympathy from fans and family across the globe, many of whom are organizing events and tributes to help support his wife and children.

"Roc Raida was a true leader of innovation," said Grammy Award-winner DJ 3D. "When I met him years ago, he was the first DJ I saw that combined beat juggling and body tricks. He thrived to be the best and he was indeed a threat to several DJs who attempted to battle him. The thing I liked most about Roc Raida is that he was an amazing battle DJ who knew how to rock a party."

The New York tribute should be an epic event, reminiscent of the classic DJ battles Cohen and others used to throw, featuring crews like the Beat Junkies, Allies and X-Ecutioners.

"I wanted it to have that nostalgic real feeling of turntablism in the '90s," Doug Cohen explained. "The response from all the performers was incredible -- the entire DJ community just came together. We're gonna make it a special night, we've got some incredible stuff planned, and it really is going to be a night to remember."

Roc Raida was a true legend, we're happy to see his life being celebrated by such a talented group of artists.

Tickets for the event are on sale now.
