After much buzz surrounding her upcoming studio album, now titled 'Rated R,' Rihanna has finally released the project's bold first single 'Russian Roulette.' The "daring" track, which was penned by labelmate Ne-Yo, debuted on the singer's official website RihannaNow.com earlier today. Labeled "dark" by critics -- and appropriately ending with a gunshot -- 'Russian Roulette' tells the story of a tumultuous relationship with a "dangerous" guy. "You can see my heart beating, you can see it through my chest/ I'm terrified, but I'm not leaving/ I know that I must pass this test," Rihanna sings on the chorus, "So just pull the trigger."
The single and forthcoming album is her fourth studio release, and the first since the February assault by then-boyfriend Chris Brown. Since the attack, Rihanna continued to build her reputation as a fashionista, but stayed away from the stage until she was called by hip-hop icon Jay-Z to lend her vocals to 'Run This Town,' and, consequently, join him onstage at a September 11th benefit concert and television appearance on 'The Jay Leno Show.'
According to a press release, a video for 'Russian Roulette,' is set to debut on ABC. Rihanna was spotted entering studio space in New York's Meatpacking District this past weekend and was reportedly shooting the video for her new single with 'Disturbia' director Anthony Mandler.
'Rated R' is due in stores and online on November 23. Listen to 'Russian Roulette' here.
