Rocko Joins Monica on New Reality Show
There's nothing like a reality show to kick-start a stalled career. Nineties urban pop singer Monica, who is probably best known for her 1998 fight-off duet with Brandy, 'The Boy Is Mine,' but who also notched up her own hits 'Angel of Mine,' and 'Don't Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days),' too, is the star of a new BET reality series, 'Still Standing.'
The show, which debuted Oct.5, is co-hosted by her former boyfriend and current fiancé, rapper Rocko aka Rodney Hill Jr. Hill is the father of Monica's two sons, Rodney III and Romello. The couple reunited in 2000. Prior to this stable relationship, Monica's personal life took a tragic turn when her boyfriend, Jarvis "Knot" Weems, committed suicide in that same year.
Though reports have stated Monica has undergone struggles with her record label, J, in 2003, she began a career comeback, releasing her third album, appropriately titled 'After The Storm.' Three years later came a fourth album, 'The Makings of Me.' The 29-year-old Grammy-winning singer is due to release a new record, also titled 'Still Standing,' next year on J Records.
In typical fly-on-the-wall reality show form, 'Still Standing' documents the Atlanta native's latest attempt at reviving her career, including the process of recording her fifth album. Naturally, domestic issues pepper the drama as her family life with Rocko is thrown in for good measure. The rapper is also busy helming his own career. The fellow Atlanta-based artist and Dirty South scenester is said to be working on his second album, which is also due out next year. Rocko released his debut, 'Self-Made,' last year, scoring a hit with 'Umma Do Me.' Rocko is a longtime behind-the-scenes player, producing songs for several artists, including Hitman Sammy Sam, Young Dro, Dem Franchize Boyz, Li'l Flip and Pastor Troy through his Rocky Road production company.
