Calle 13 swept the 10th Annual Latin Grammy Awards on Nov. 5, picking up five trophies. The rap duo's third studio album, 'Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo,' won for Album of the Year and Best Urban Album, while their collaboration on 'No Hay Nadie Como Tú' with Mexican rock group Cafe Tacuba won Best Alternative Song and Record of the Year. The Latin Grammy from Best Short Form Music Video rounded out the group's five wins. Calle 13's accepted the award for their song 'La Perla,' a nod to San Juan's skid row featuring Panamanian salsa singer Ruben Blades, that they also performed that evening.
In their acceptance speech for Album of the Year, Calle 13 -- Rene "Residente" Perez and his half brother Eduardo "Visitante" Cabra -- gave a special dedication to the late folk singer/activist Mercedes Sosa. Sosa, founder of the Nueva Cancion movement, a 50's-60's form of leftist Latin rock music, died in October, at the age of 74. "She is a voice who should never die, and young people should listen to her," Residente said in his speech. "In an era of dictatorship and difficult times, she wasn't afraid."
Finally, the group concluded with a special message for independent artists worldwide. "To all the people who make music in this moment of independent music, to hell with record labels!" Residente exclaimed, while accepting the award for Best Alternative Song. "This is the moment for those of us who make real music."
