Songstress Alicia Keys will take the stage at a benefit concert to commemorate World AIDS Day, Tuesday (Dec. 1) in New York. The event, will take place at New York's Nokia Theater and will stream live via Keys' YouTube channel. Her performance will feature songs from her upcoming release 'The Element of Freedom.'Keys, who is the global ambassador for the non-profit organization Keep a Child Alive, has worked feverishly to raise both awareness and money to assist in the fight against HIV/AIDS. "The proceeds of this concert are going to go directly to my organization," she said in a video advertising the event. During the concert Keys will reportedly chose five contest winners to travel with her to Africa.
The idea for the organization came about in 2002 after a woman in Mombasa, Kenya came into the AIDS Research and Family Care Clinic in need of anti-viral medicine for her three sons suffering form the disease. Due to high medicine costs, the woman was not able to pay for the treatment and received financial assistance to obtain the medication. Director Peter Edge became the organization's first donor while Keys came aboard later, becoming their first global ambassador. Today the company assists over 250,000 people including children in orphanages suffering from HIV and AIDS.
