R&B singer Pleasure P, real name Marcus Cooper, issued a statement yesterday (Dec. 3) addressing the internet-fueled rumor that he was involved in a 2006 child molestation scandal. The former Pretty Ricky front man, who is up for a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 2010, drafted the statement through his lawyers, denying the accuracy of information that has recently surfaced on the web. "All of the recent rumors and accusations that are being circulated about me are 100% false," Cooper said. "They are disgusting and vile; and they are being spread by individuals with their own sick agendas."The controversy began when a series of Twitter posts documenting a 2006 child molestation case emerged from a woman claiming to be the daughter of Cooper's former lawyer. The posts included photos of court documents and admissions from trial witnesses, which seemed to lend validity to the story. The woman, who went under the alias of "AGoldstein" claimed that her father represented Cooper as a defendant in the 2006 case, but had not been paid the sum of money owed to him for his services.
"The purported documents that are also being circulated are forgeries," Cooper continued in his statement, "I have never met or known anyone by the name of "AGoldstein" or Laura Goldstein or Ashley Goldstein, which I believe are fictitious names. I have never been represented by an attorney named Goldstein. For someone to go to such depths to assassinate my character and slander my good name is truly criminal. My attorneys are investigating this matter and will take all necessary and appropriate action to protect my name and reputation."
Cooper's former groupmates said that they were unable to comment on the case because of legal restrictions but they made it clear that it had been their decision to kick him out of Pretty Ricky in 2007.
