Houston, Texas rapper Chamillionaire will perform at a free concert event in his home state this coming week to honor the memory of those lost in the tragic shooting at the Fort Hood army base last month. On Nov. 5, psychiatrist Nidel Hasan opened fire on the Texas base, killing 13 soldiers and injuring at least 30 more before he was shot down by police officers.The event, titled "Fort Hood Community Strong," will feature performances from Chamillionaire, Staind singer Aaron Lewis, the Zac Brown Band, comedian Dana Carvey and even an appearance from the famed TV sock puppet Lamb Chop. Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers will be on hand to do a meet-and-greet with troops and their families. The event has been billed as "a day for healing, fun and entertainment" for the military community and will provide food, carnival rides and a range of other entertainment.
According to the Associated Press, despite the tragedy of last month's shooting, over 40 Army counselors from the Fort Hood unit were deployed to Afghanistan on Friday, Dec. 4. Maj. Laura Suttinger of Fort Atkinson, Wis., said that the troops hoped to honor their fallen comrades. "I think they decided that same day of the shooting that they were more dedicated than ever in honor of the soldiers that we lost and have stood firm in that commitment," Suttinger said. "They were all very dedicated, caring soldiers and they will not be forgotten, and we're carrying on in their honor.
The Fort Hood Community Strong event will be held on Friday, Dec. 11 from 1-7PM at the Fort Hood Stadium, in Fort Hood, Texas.
