Keith Murray Talks HIV/AIDS Awareness Trip to Africa

Rapper Keith Murray took his fight to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS to Mozambique, Africa in an attempt to bring global attention to the plight of children fighting the virus. The topic is close to the 35-year-old's hearts as both his mother and older sister died from the virus. "My trip to Mozambique was a very emotional and inspirational experience," he said in an interview. "This is my third trip to Africa but this journey was much different because of the cause. I wanted to help my kids to appreciate the simple things in life and to be generous to others. We can be so ungrateful here in the states."

"I met young kids with AIDS that don't know their parents or their own names that smile and appreciate when you give them a hug and a handshake. I was the first person with some type of notoriety to visit them and they said I may be the only person that would ever come see them again."

Murray visited the Southeast African country to commemorate World AIDS Day, which was Dec. 1. While on the trip he, participated in charity work, made public appearances and held concerts in the country's capitol city, Maputo. Nearly 10 percent of the country's citizens, many of whom are orphans, have been infected with the virus.

"It was a humbling experience and it changed my life," he said. "I no longer take the simple things in life for granted."
