Lil Wayne's rock opus, 'Rebirth,' was slated for a pre-Christmas release and then scrapped after Amazon accidentally shipped 500 copies of the record, leading it to land all over the Internet. The audience response was somewhere between apathy and utter horror, but Weezy's camp claimed the album wasn't done yet, even though it was packaged and ready to ship. Now, after a potential release date around Wayne's jail stint beginning in February and other sources saying 'Rebirth' was canned entirely, Walmart is claiming a June 22 release.
According to Digital Music News, "The pre-order is also unavailable on the iTunes Store, though the first-run version is totally available through unauthorized online channels. Meanwhile, Walmart is listing the release date at June 22nd. The earlier consensus was that 'Rebirth' would finally emerge during the first quarter." We thought 2010 was the beginning of a new era and time to move on, yet this sounds awfully similar to the hold-ups of 2009. On a more positive note, these delays might result in a more tolerable record.
"For the untold thousands who downloaded the album's songs free, they're just grist for the mill, placeholders until something else comes along, preferably better," wrote Jon Caramanica in the New York Times in December. "According to a representative for Universal Motown Records, a new version of 'Rebirth' is now slated to be released in the first quarter of 2010."
