Michael Jackson's Memorial Service Nominated for NAACP Award
Leave it to Michael Jackson to prove that even his funeral is worthy of accolades. The King of Pop's televised memorial service has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Jackson snagged the posthumous nomination in the Outstanding Variety category and will go up against President Obama's Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial.
The ceremony, which was broadcast simultaneously on several networks and cable stations, was attended by thousands of fans who won tickets via an online Internet raffle. Mariah Carey, Usher and Jennifer Hudson were among the event's performers.
Since his death last June just about everything involving Jackson has grabbed public interest. Several of his albums dominated the charts in the weeks following his passing. The documentary 'This Is It,' which showed video footage of the 50-year-old's rehearsal for the tour he was to embark on in July of 2009, made over $250 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing musical documentary of all time. On the awards show front, Jackson swept last year's American Music Awards taking home four trophies, and will receive a Lifetime Achievement Awards at this year's Grammys.
The NAACP Image Awards air live on Fox Feb. 26 at 8PM EST.
