Chicago-native Common is taking his charitable efforts back to his hometown and raising money for Haiti. The Grammy-winning emcee will participate in 'Chicago's Hope for Haiti' concert to raise funds for earthquake victims. Aside from Common's hip-hop influence the fundraiser will showcase performances from local gospel, jazz and R&B artists. Following in similar footsteps as the national 'Hope for Haiti' telethon, which aired on several networks in January, viewers can make donations via the telephone or online. For Common helping the people of Haiti is an on-going process. "I participated with 'Hope for Haiti.' I was on the telephone [taking donations]," he told The BoomBox. "I've sent some clothes and things over there through personal friends. As things open up we're just going to keep it going."
"We also have to realize this is a process, we not gonna make all the change in one day. It shouldn't be something where we just raise money, just one day and just one week -- I mean people are going to be in Haiti for a while. I'm going to continue to bring something about."
The event will be held at 'Chicago's House of Hope' on Monday, Feb. 8 at 7PM CST and will air on local television stations. All proceeds will benefit non-profit organizations Yele, Samaritan's Purse and International Child Care. For more information visit chicagohopeforhaiti.org.
