Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past year, it would be impossible to deny the fact that Gaga-mania has swept this fine nation. Even notorious troublemaker, 50 Cent, recently dished that he would marry the outlandish pop star, but it seems that we've finally found one Gaga naysayer.
In a recent interview with NME magazine, M.I.A. had some less-than-positive things to say about her industry counterpart. In response to a probe about whether the Internet has destroyed the mythology around pop stars, the Sri Lankan native let loose with a tirade against Ms. Poker Face. "Again, there's Lady Gaga -- people say we're similar, that we both mix all these things in the pot and spit them out differently, but she spits it out exactly the same!" she said "None of her music's reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza music, you know?"
The ever out-spoken singer continued with her rant, condemning Gaga for her lack of originality, and even accusing her of sounding more like M.I.A. than, well -- M.I.A.
"She's not progressive, but she's a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I f---ing do!" she said. "That's a talent and she's got a great team behind her, but she's the industry last's stab at making itself important -- saying, 'You need our money behind you, the endorsements, the stadiums' Respect to her, she's keeping a hundred thousand people in work, but my belief is: Do It Yourself."
To add insult to injury, M.I.A. threw one final shot at Gaga when asked if record labels are still relevant in the music industry. "Are they even interested in making money from music anymore? Lady Gaga plugs 15 things in her new video. Dude, she even plugs a burger!" she said.
So far, the blogosphere has gotten a kick out of M.I.A.'s scathing words, but maybe 50 will eventually come to Gaga's rescue.
