Nas will step outside of his emcee role and contribute to a new ESPN E:60 documentary about the Liberian amputee soccer team. The Queensbridge emcee will lend his voice and music to tell the story of a team that helped heal the wounded nation of Liberia. The documentary will follow two amputees who were victims of the Liberian Civil War; a war that lasted 14 years and killed over 250,000 people and left millions wounded. Amputees in Liberia are considered perpetrators of the Civil War and most live on the streets and are seen as outcasts.
In 2007, a soccer team was formed to help them. Men who were on opposing sides became teammates and heroes. A soccer league of seven teams was then created for them in Liberia's capital, Monrovia. By 2008 the Liberian amputee soccer team were champions in Africa. "I realized my realities were like a walk in the park, compared to what these kids go through in these other countries," Nas said.
In related news, Nas will release his upcoming project with Damian Marley, 'Distant Relatives,' a story that traces Hip-Hop's origin from Africa to the present, on May 18. The 'Liberian Amputee Soccer Team' documentary will air May 4 at 7:00PM EST on ESPN. Check out the trailer after the jump.
