Mos Def, John Legend Headlining Gulf Aid

Mos Def and John Legend are teaming up with rockers and New Orleans homeowners Lenny Kravitz and Ani Difranco for Gulf Aid, a benefit performance in support of those affected by the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The gig will take place at Mardi Gras World River City in New Orleans on May 16 with a long list of NOLA performers, including Allen Toussaint, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers, Rebirth Brass Band and the Voice of the Wetlands Allstars featuring Dr. John, Cyril Neville and Tab Benoit.

"It's only fitting that the individuals who are the protectors of our culture, the musicians, come to the aid of those who help supply our culture, the fishermen," New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said on Monday.

Tickets to the event cost $50 and all proceeds will benefit fishermen and their families. Many people make their livelihood along the Gulf Coast -- an environment which remains in a catastrophic state due to a massive oil spill that BP, a U.K.-based company, has taken responsibility for. The benefit performance comes three weeks after the rig's initial explosion. Thus far, four million gallons of crude oil have leaked into the Gulf causing massive disruption to major American fishing areas and ecosystems off the Louisiana coast.
