DJ Absolut Sues for Beat Royalties on Drake Hit

Drake
's debut album 'Thank Me Later' will see an official release this Wednesday, June 9, but New York City radio personality, DJ Absolut, is currently suing for unpaid royalties from his contribution to the Toronto rapper's 2009 hit 'Best I Ever Had.'

The New York Daily News reports that DJ Absolut has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against producer Kia Shine, for withholding royalties from the song, which utilizes his beat. Shine originally used the beat for Lil Wayne's track 'Do It for the Boy,' but it was later incorporated into Drake's hit single. Absolut says that in December 2008, Shine agreed to give him a 20 percent cut of all profits from the song, but went ahead and made another arrangement with Drake, to personally receive 25 percent of profits. Shine has reportedly made $1 million in royalties from the song so far.

Absolut's lawyer, Brian Levy, issued a statement explaining that the DJ was forced to take legal action since it has been impossible to contact Shine and his camp. "Kia Shine needs to uphold his end of the agreement," Levy said. "It wasn't my client's desire to resort to legal action to get him to do it. We've reached out to him, but he has not chosen to respond."
