Ja Rule Heads to Trial for 2007 Weapons Charge

Ja Rule will stand trial in August to face a gun possession charge served three years ago. After leaving a concert in 2007, Ja Rule, born Jeffrey Atkins and a companion were pulled over in the rapper's Maybach by the NYPD and cited for speeding, suspended registration and no insurance. The vehicle was searched and a loaded semi-automatic gun was found in the rear driver's side.

A Manhattan judge turned down a request from Ja Rule's lawyer on June 8 to discuss issues surrounding DNA evidence, saying there have been "no new or novel techniques involved in the testing procedure." A trial date was set for August 18. Ja Rule has pleaded not guilty to the charge and if convicted he faces up to four years behind bars.

Ja Rule was not present at the June 8 hearing due to a movie he's filming in another city.
