Detroit's hip-hop community will be uniting this weekend to promote a positive message to the violence-plagued city's youth. On Saturday, June 12, many of Detroit's most prominent hip-hop artists will convene at the Heal Detroit Rally, a free event to protest the death of 7-year-old Aiyana Jones, who was killed by police on May 16. Among the rappers expected to attend are Royce Da 5'9", Trick Trick, Al Nuke, Lodge Boyz, Seven the General, Big Herk, Stretch Money, DJ Fingers and TJ Detroit Streets. "I came from those types of broken homes; that's why every year I make it my duty to have school supply drives and food drives for homeless shelters," explained rapper Al Nuke, who runs the non-profit Operation Hip Hop. "These are things I take the initiative to do if nobody else does."
The event begins at noon, with the groups convening from the west and east side's of the city via 7 Mile Road, starting at Greenfield on the west, and Van Dyke on the east. The performances and the rally, which aims to promote the value of an education and avoiding violence, start at 3PM.
Detroit police have volunteered to help with crowd control, and various local businesses will be sponsoring, participating and donating goods. For more information, or to get involved, click here.
