Bad Boy artist, Janelle Monae, will be honored with the Vanguard Award at the 23rd annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards on June 25.Monae, who has earned a name for herself as an eclectic singer, songwriter and producer will receive the prestigious award, which the ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) describes as recognizing "the impact of musical genres that help shape the future of American music."
The 24-year-old began her rise to fame after linking with OutKast's Big Boi and appearing on the group's 2006 album 'Idlewild.' Her 2007 debut EP 'Metropolis, Suite I: The Chase,' earned her a Grammy nomination and in May she released her follow-up album 'ArchAndroid (Suites II and III).' Past recipients of the Vanguard Award include the Beastie Boys, Santigold, The Strokes and The Killers.
N.W.A. founder Dr. Dre will also be honored at the 2010 Rhythm & Soul Awards, where he will receive the Founders Award. The 23rd annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards will take place on Friday, June 25, in Los Angeles.
