Snoop Dogg Sued by Miles Davis Bassist

Earlier this week, Snoop Dogg was slapped with a lawsuit filed in Michigan by respected bass player and vocalist Michael Henderson.

Henderson played extensively with Miles Davis late in his career, and also recorded with many other jazz and soul artists, including Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. He also enjoyed a successful solo career as a bassist and vocalist, releasing eight albums from 1976-86.

On Tuesday, July 6, Henderson's lawyers filed suit against Snoop and fellow Cali rappers MC Eiht, Goldie Lo and Kam, along with Snoop's Doggystyle Records and Universal Music, for illegally sampling the song 'Riding' from his 1979 album 'Do It All.' The funky disco song was allegedly used on a mixtape by Snoop & co. called 'Flashbacks,' which the suit claims was used to promote Snoop's 2008 album 'Ego Trippin'. Additionally Henderson's lawyers charge that Snoop's 'Hands on the Wheel' also incorporated elements from 'Riding,' and was similarly used to promote Snoop's West Fest tour in 2008.

According to the leaked court documents, Henderson is seeking an unspecified amount of damages for copyright infringement, unjust enrichment and unfair competition. Snoop has yet to comment regarding the case, but he's not alone. A separate lawsuit filed by Henderson targets Murs and 9th Wonder for the same reasons.

Michael Henderson was heralded by the late Marvin Gaye in an Essence Magazine article as the sex symbol of their day. More than just Snoop have lifted not only music but rifts and vocal intonations from Mr. Henderson. I remember asking him why were there no bar codes on his albums? Soon after they appeared on his next album. Shame on Snoop for indulging in the practice of stealing from artists who took the time to actually play instruments and pay dues. Michael has a long history of backing up others from Miles to Mick Jagger. This is so unfair. ----NJ Curl

Having wrapped up my career as a radio DJ in jazz radio, I have always had strong questions about the originality of today's rap music. Some of the most popular songs of the '70s have been woven into rap music, mostly without the permission of other musicians. This is what happens when the music industry, as well as the radio industry, becomes deregulated...people with no talent taking over for people with real talent.

These guys are nothing but a bunch of inner city ghetto thugs standing on a stage playing with their balls and fast talking eubonics instead of standing on a street corner in the hood doing the same thing.

Exactly, these guys aren't making as much money from album sales unless they buy the music legally. Most musicians make money from concerts and merchandising.

The mixtapes are for promotional use only, no money is made off of them unless they are being bootlegged and usually its a DJ selecting the music and vocals without the artist knowing what is being sampled.

@dynofossil- Jay-Z is garbage. The man has ripped off most of his lyrics as far back as the 80's from lesser known Rap artist so he can get away without paying royalties.

Most of you sound like racist. If you dont like the hi[p hop culture dont comment your wasting your time. You guys should move to Arizona where they pass laws you probably approve of with that flip flopping McCain. One minute you support amnesty for illegals then when your approval rate is down you dont.
