Much like MTV, BET has slowly begun to shift its focus from music videos to original programming, and is scheduled to debut its first original music documentary later this month.

The film is entitled 'My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women and Hip-Hop,' and centers around the contribution women have made on hip-hop, and the role hip-hop has played in the lives of some the industry's biggest female artists, like MC Lyte, Yo Yo, Missy Elliot, Rah Digga, Eve and Trina.

Directed by Ava DuVernay, the doc features music executives, journalists and the groundbreaking female artists addressing the "gender-specific differences in artistry, marketing, promotion and economics," along with interviews with male industry leaders, like Russell Simmons, Jermaine Dupri, Questlove, about the frequently-overlooked importance of women to the hip-hop movement."This is a story that could not be told by one voice. It required a chorus. And although this story is comprehensive, it is still likely one of many truths about the role of women in hip-hop," said BET's President of Music programming, Stephen Hill.

'My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women and Hip-Hop' airs August 30 at 10PM EST.
