On September 9, BAM will host a charity event, featuring three screenings of the film, a Q&A session with filmmakers Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant, and several of the graffiti writers and b-boys who appeared in the seminal film. The event will also feature a fully catered reception with music provided by former graffiti writer DJ Kay Slay, who appeared in the film under his graffiti moniker Dezzy Dez.
As previously reported, the film's 25-year-old negative stock has deteriorated over time and must be digitally repaired, an expensive restoration process that will hopefully return the picture to its original clarity and intensity.
'Style Wars' first aired in 1984 on PBS, featuring infamous graffiti writers like Cap, Dondi, Skeme, Seen, Kase 2, Futura and more. It took home the grand jury prize for documentaries at the 1984 United States Film and Video Festival, which would later become the Sundance Film Festival, earning its place as a true hip-hop classic.
The film will screen at BAM on Sept. 9 at 4:40, 6:50 and 9:15 PM, with the Q&A session in between the second and third screenings.
