According to TMZ, Mos Def was originally scheduled to perform at the Kool Haus in Toronto on February 25, accepting a $12,500 deposit in anticipation of following through on the gig. But a day before he was set to take the stage, Mos apparently backed out of the deal, keeping the check and causing promoters to lose a total of $57,000 on account of "lost customers, sales and goodwill."
This isn't the first time that Mos has been in legal hot water. Earlier this year, Turkish composer Selda Bagcan sued the Brooklyn native for sampling her track 'Ince Ince Kar Yaar' for his song 'Supermagic,' the first track on his Grammy-nominated 2009 release 'The Ecstatic.' She claims that she was unaware of the uncleared sampling of her music until she watched the 2010 Grammy Awards and heard the track played.
Most recently, Mos announced that he would be putting his music career on hold to star in the New York City production of John Guare's stage show 'A Free Man of Color,' opening Nov. 18. The play also stars Jeffrey Wright, who shared an Outer Critics Circle Award with Mos for their roles in the 2002 Broadway production of 'Topdog/Underdog.'
