Fat Joe Remembers Persevering Despite Non-Believers

In a recent interview with the BoomBox, Fat Joe spoke about the struggles Latinos face in the rap industry. "[I'm] one of the only dudes relevant for 16 years repping the Latinos," Joe proclaimed as he proudly discussed his many achievements since bursting on the scene in the '90s.

"I always had a dream of being a rap star.  Then I went to the Apollo Theater and I came in first place four weeks in a row," Joey Crack told the BoomBox.

My mother and father would say, 'You're never gonna make it -- this ain't for Latinos.'

"My mother and father would say 'You're never gonna make it -- this ain't for Latinos. You ain't gonna be no rapper.' And I always told them, 'This is what I want to do. This is what I love to do.'"

Fat Joe also credited his hometown of the Bronx as his inspiration for becoming a rapper.  "I grew up in the Bronx -- that's the Jerusalem, that's the Mecca, that's the birth place of hip-hop music. It's an honor to be from there."  Thanks to his appearances at the Apollo and his Bronx-born roots, Fat Joe knew he had the ability to rise above the criticism about his ethnicity and build a career out of rapping.
