The presence of another producer and poor mixing job suggest that Dre intends to just rap on this track and it leaked in an incomplete state. That said, Eminem does sound rather strong, keeping up his string of rapid-fire lyricism that has steered him back on hip-hop's bestseller list this year.
There is no indication, as there was with 'Kush,' that this is a leak that was specifically meant for 'The Detox,' but it likely came from the same source. Earlier this week, Dre bemoaned the leaks for presenting his rabid fan base with unfinished material in an unintended order. As he tells it, 'Kush' is the only song referencing marijuana on the album and he didn't want listeners to get the wrong idea by using it as a first single.
"It got leaked, and it was a version of it that I wasn't really happy about," he explained on Power 106. "But we're gonna go ahead and push it and put it out, since everybody seems to like it. It's about weed smoking, and I didn't want people to think that's what my album was about. This is actually the only type of song with that type of content on it."
Check out 'I Need a Doctor' here. An official, mastered version of 'Kush' is now up at Dre's website, too.
