The Tanya Hamilton-directed film, currently playing in select cities, is set in 1976 Philadelphia, focusing on a Black Panther (Mackie) who moves back to the city to reunite with another ex-Panther (Washington). The flick has been nominated for a Gotham Award and the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize, and stars the Roots frontman as Islamic convert Bostic Washington, brother of Mackie's character Marcus.
Collectively, The Roots have appeared in several films including 'Dave Chappelle's Block Party,' Spike Lee's 'Bamboozled' and Marc Levin's 'Brooklyn Babylon.' Black Thought, who acts under his birth name Tariq Trotter, appeared in 2004's 'Love Rome,' '08's 'Explicit Ills' and last year's 'On the Inside.' He is next set to appear in the 2011 indie flick 'Yelling to the Sky,' which also stars Zoe Kravitz and Gabourey Sidibe.
