"The title is a play on words, specifically in the 'presents' part," Diggy explained to Billboard. "It's not just presents as in gifts, but also presents as in introduction. On this tape I'm covering '80s and '90s classics, there are scratches on there and it's hosted by none other than DJ Premier." The first track to leak from the new mixtape is 'Shook Ones,' a freestyle over Mobb Deep's single of the same name. Diggy revealed that it was the first song that he and DJ Premier collaborated on, before they eventually linked up to work on the entire 13-track project.
According to Diggy, the mixtape focuses on the progressive lyrical content of '80s and '90s rap. "I'm bringing back substance," he said. "A lot of people don't have lyrical content or substance or a message even they're trying to get out." Additional samples on 'Past Presents Future' will include A Tribe Called Quest's 'Electric Relaxation,' and Nas' 'Nas Is Like.'
