'Fela!' May Be Headed to Nigeria

The Jay-Z and Smith family-produced musical 'Fela!' may have ended its run on Broadway last Sunday, but it appears that the show will go on. The play's lead producer, Stephen Hendel, says that he intends to bring the show on the road and wants to play a few dates in the Nigerian capital of Lagos sometime in the late winter or early spring. Nigeria was the home of the play's main subject and de facto composer Fela Kuti.

"We're in the process of trying to make arrangements to do so," said Hendel to the NYTimes. "No Broadway show has ever been to Nigeria in this fashion. It's premature to announce anything, but it's our hope to bring the show there soon."

'Fela!' has migrated from New York to London and Hendel also thinks it's possible that he could workout a broadcast of one of the upcoming performances for interested parties in Lagos. A global simulcast is already in the works for later this month for theaters across the United States, Britain, Canada and other countries.

'Fela!' is set in a Lagos nightclub and has received rave reviews from critics since its opening in November 2009. These accolades include 11 Tony Award nominations.
