The project also marks a family affair for Jean, as he serves as A&R on the single, while his sister, Melky, wrote and performed the song. "Eighty percent of the population of Haiti survives on just a dollar a day," said Melky in a statement to The BoomBox. "Those most affected and living in poverty are women and children who make up about 70 percent of the world's poorest people. With the 'Care for Haiti' album, we hope to be a catalyst for change and to raise resources to help provide fundamental business skills as well as access to health, food and educational opportunities for the women and children of Haiti. Women are the world's greatest natural resource for fighting poverty; by educating one woman we can change a community and raise the hopes of a country."
Big name musicians for the Haiti benefit album include Patti Labelle, Sean Paul, Talib Kweli, Jill Scott, and India.Arie. The album will be released March 8, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the celebration of International Women's Day. For more information visit CareforHaiti.org.
