Simmons joined with New York City Councilman Charles Barron and others on the steps of City Hall to drive home the point that law enforcement can't keep total peace on its own. Communities need leaders that set a proper example and resolve disputes without the use of weapons.
The week's organizer, Erica Ford, told CBS that 'Peace Week' also serves as a tribute to parents that have lost their children as a result of gun violence. As participants like Simmons would have it, gun laws would be stricter in many cases.
"From U.S. Representative Gabrielle Gifford, her staff and her constituents in Arizona to countless mothers who've lost their children to gun violence," said Ford when asked who benefits from the week.
