While many artists use social networking sites as a platform to promote their music, former Def Jam artist Lichelle "BO$$" Laws is hoping to get the word out about her health condition. Laws suffers from renal disease, which prevents her kidneys from filtering toxins and other waste from the blood.

According to AllHipHop.com, the Detroit born rapper is currently undergoing dialysis and is need of a kidney transplant. The 42-year-old was inspired to use Facebook after hearing a story of a man who successfully used the site to find a kidney donor. In addition to Facebook, Laws and friends have also launched the Rappers Need Kidneys Too campaign in hopes of speeding up the donation process, and raising awareness regarding the kidney disease.

Under the moniker "BO$$," the rapper released her debut album 'Born Gangstaz' in 1993, spawning the hit singles 'Deeper' and 'Recipe of a Hoe.' Laws moved to Los Angeles after graduating from high school where she caught the attention of rapper DJ Quik, who put her on a track with his former partner AMG. Russell Simmons heard the song, and promptly signed BO$$ to Def Jam Records.

She was later released from her contract and the focus of a small scandal when the Wall Street Journal revealed that, despite her gangster rap persona, she actually grew up in an affluent family and attended private school.

Laws has since moved to Dallas and found work as a radio DJ. Her last musical effort was the 2004 mixtape 'The Six Million Dollar Mixtape.'
