Sarah Palin Disses Common, Quotes 'Rapper's Delight'

Despite protesting rapper Common's poetry performance at the White House Wednesday night (May 11), presidential hopeful Sarah Palin claims to be a fan of hip-hop, using her familiarity with 32-year-old party-rap song 'Rapper's Delight' as evidence of her love of the culture.

In an appearance on Fox News' 'On the Record,' Palin, who contended that she is "obviously" a free speech advocate, took issue with Common's lyrics on his 2000 track 'A Song for Assata,' a tribute to black revolutionary and "domestic terrorist" Assata Shakur, who was convicted of murdering a police officer in 1977.

"This rapper -- we thought that we were to be united under the leader of the free world, Barack Obama, in tamping down racism and inciting violence and cop killing, certainly, and killing a former president," Palin ranted. "All those things that this rapper has glorified and really is known for, it just certainly reflects a lack of judgment on the White House's part."

Palin went on to say that she is not "anti-rap," and referenced Fox News anchor Brett Baier's January performance of Sugar Hill Gang's 1979 accidental classic, 'Rapper's Delight,' a song which she claims to know the lyrics of.

"I am obviously a proponent of free speech... I'm not anti-rap. In fact, like Bret Baier, I know the lyrics to 'Rapper's Delight,' too," Palin continued, in a comical tone. "But I am saying just common decency in the White House -- wouldn't we like to see a reflection of all that is wonderful and great, a shining city on a hill that the White House is supposed to be, with events inside of that house that reflects the patriotism and the decency and the influence of America."
Common did not appear too concerned about Palin's criticism, tweeting "So apparently Sarah Palin and Fox News doesn't like me," to CNN political analyst Roland Martin, before Palin's appearance.

Palin and FOX only say what they think their audience wants to hear as far as Neocon propaganda. This imprudent commentary has caused damage to the world view of America including critical comments such as this which expose not only racism and bigotry but the obtuse world-view of the people this kind of rhetoric seems fit to represent. I was compelled to create a visual commentary about this very thing on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/01/sarah-palin-made-me-do-it.html
