The late rapper's gal pal, who chose to remain anonymous for fear of her own safety, told TMZ that the rapper was involved in some beef with a jealous neighbor living in their apartment complex. The man, instigated by the success of M-Bone's rap group, had become volatile with the rapper and their feud even spilled over to Twitter.
M-Bone, born Montae Talbert and known as the comedic, dance-loving personality of the group, had borrowed his girlfriend's car around 10PM Sunday evening to head to the studio. He was shot twice in the head while trying to get inside the vehicle during a pit stop at a liquor store. A witness, identified as Bubba -- the heavyset shirtless dancer in the group's popular 'Teach Me How to Dougie' video -- was reportedly in the car at the time of the shooting and was treated for minor wounds, sustained from broken glass, at a nearby hospital. The gunman reportedly drove off but then made a u-turn to the crime scene as if making sure the hit was made.
A vigil made up of family, friends and fans was held Monday night (May 16) at the scene of the crime.
No arrests have been made in the case, and people are encouraged to contact Los Angeles police with any information.
According to MTV, "The Inglewood Police Department is asking anyone with information to come forward and call its homicide division at (310) 412-5246 or its 24-hour anonymous hotline number, (888) 41 CRIME, or (888) 412-7463."
