Rapper Drake has received many accolades in his short career, but his most recent trophy holds a special place in his heart. The Young Money MC was honored with the Hal David Starlight Award at the 42nd annual Songwriters Hall of Fame gala held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City Thursday (June 16) night.

"Just won the most incredible award and performed for my mother...a year ago today she was being wheeled into a surgery room...I love you," Drake tweeted to more than 2 million of his followers.

Upon receiving the award, the Canadian rapper thanked Alicia Keys, for allowing him the opportunity to write and provide background vocals on her single 'Un-thinkable (I'm Ready),' the song for which he was recognized. He also performed 'Best I Ever Had,' off his 'Thank Me Later' debut.

A new edition to the awards ceremony, which is a sub-division of the National Academy of Popular Music, the Hal David Starlight Award celebrates the accomplishments of young writers who have made waves in the industry and lists Alicia Keys, John Legend and John Meyer among past winners.

The night's other award recipients included music legend Chaka Khan and country star Garth Brooks.
