As details trickle in and video footage makes the Internet rounds, it appears clear that the NYPD was slacking in its crowd control ability. Inside Tammany Hall, the event celebrating the new Pete Rock and Smif-N-Wessun album, 'Monumental,' was peaceful. However, after a fight broke out outside the venue, police were called to the scene and decided to shut down the event. This is where things took a turn for the worse.
Pete Rock ran down some of the night's events on his Twitter feed @chocboywunda. "EVERYBODY IM GOOD, IM WAITING 4 MY MAN TO COME OUT OF DA PRECINCT! COPS WERE BEATING PEOPLE UP AND ITS ALL ON FILM!!!!," tweeted the 'Straighten It Out' producer-rapper.
With the party shut down, the already tense scene on Orchard Street came to a violent head after the inordinate amount of police officers on hand got into numerous confrontations with the people they were ordering to clear the street.
In the footage taken by U.K. DJ Jay Diamond, cops are seen physically beating down fans in the street. At the 4:37 mark, an officer is scene swinging a billy club at Rock of Heltah Skeltah. Reportedly, Louieville Sluggah of rap group OGC was involved in an altercation that sent him to the hospital because of his injuries.
Initial rumors surfaced that Pete Rock's wife and daughter were also attacked by the police. A source told the BoomBox that Rock's daughter was indeed hospitalized following the incident.
