Salaam Remi Details Last Days With Amy Winehouse

AP

Amy Winehouse supporters are all too familiar with producer Salaam Remi, the man who crafted more than a handful of her soulful hits, namely 'Tears Dry On Their Own' and 'Me & Mr. Jones,' off the deceased star's sophomore LP 'Back to Black.' The veteran beatmaker opened up about his relationship with the fallen singer as well as his last days with her, in Vibe magazine's August/September Juice issue, on which Amy is featured on the cover.

Remi, who bears production credits for her debut album, 'Frank,' as well, looked at the British performer as more than a music industry colleague; he considered her a friend and sister, one he called "Cherry." When he caught wind of her initial passing, he took to Twitter to express his sorrow. "i Didnt hear a gunshot, n i dont see any blood, but i Feel a DEEP PAIN in my heart. A part of ME died today RIP CHERRY [sic]," he tweeted.

In the interview, Remi shares details of what he and Winehouse planned before her untimely death. "I'm in London now. I'm out here because [Amy and I] were supposed to go to a wedding today. And before I could get to her yesterday she passed. We were going to the wedding of Nick Symansky, who is the person who really found her. He found her when he was a scout at 19. And he was the manager before they got the Universal deal.

They went ahead with the wedding. All I could do was sit there and imagine how many jokes she would have been cracking with me. We were in the middle of working on the album. She finished writing the record. We just hadn't recorded.

For the last couple of weeks we were video chatting regularly. I was just talking to Nas. Both her and Nas were born on September 14, so we were going to Barbados with all of them for her birthday. She really doesn't look forward to her birthday, you know what I'm saying?"

Amy Winehouse's Vibe cover story debuts on August 16.

OMG, Amy Winehouse dead?

She was going to go to mass with me in the morning. I can't believe it! Who would have thought this would have happened to her. She was the absolute last person in the world that I would have suspected of abusing alcohol and drugs. I sure hope that it wasn't the poppers that I left for her two nights before. She asked me to bring them over to help relieve her angina. RUSH was her favorite. Ohh, I rue all of the enablers that surrounded her. Oh I am so sorry and so crushed by what has happened. I just wish that last June I hadn't auctioned off the CDs that she had signed for me. I need to get them back. I hope that the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas will return them to me.

drug's and alcohol destroy so many talented people. So easy to get into so hard to get out of. Almost impossible to stay away from once hooked. I wonder how different life would be if drug's and alcohol didn't even exist.

Wow people , have a heart. You've heard of the 27 club? Great iconic entertainers died at 27. All from drugs, yes, but for unknown reasons they were years ahead of other musicians. So why you listen to your Brittneys, and those other helium sounding bubblegum singers remember they wont be remembered 20 years from now.

Im so sick of hearing about amy winehouse, why are we glorifying a drug addict that wasted her life. Why are we not praising our soldiers that have given their lives to protect our country and our way of life? Why are we not listing the names (with families permission) of our fallen soldiers so the country can have a moment to mourn them or say a prayer for them or their families? As a country we really need to get our priorities straight and give credit where credit is due and not glorify someone that broke the law and wasted their life and talent.

...considering you love Vanilla Ice and Milli Vanilli, you might think someone as talented as Amy wasn't "that good."
