'Planet Rock: The Story of Hip Hop and the Crack Generation' is the latest installment of VH1's Emmy-winning Rock Doc series, and will feature interviews with notable weed enthusiasts Snoop Dogg and Cypress Hill, OG coke rapper Raekwon and The RZA, an admitted former PCP user, alongside infamous drug dealers "Freeway" Ricky Ross and Azie Faison.
The doc focuses on the early days of hip-hop, examining how the culture became inexorably intertwined with the crack cocaine epidemic in the mid-'80s.
"Based primarily on the first-person accounts of four famous dealers-turned-rappers, the film also widens its lens at points to show how crack changed America culturally, socially and politically," reveals a press release. "Using rare footage, photos, and animation, all set to the beats and rhymes of the iconic hip hop tracks of the day, the documentary explores how media hysteria, racism and political reaction produced policies and laws that have left us with the largest -and most disproportionately African-American- prison population in the world."
'Planet Rock' is executive produced and narrated by former gangsta rapper-pimp Ice-T. The two-hour special airs Sept. 18 at 10PM EST on VH1.
