The Toronto rap sensation will be the second honoree to receive this award from Canada's Walk of Fame, a distinction presented to a young Canadian "making a positive impact in the fields of music, film, literature, visual or performing arts, sports, innovation or philanthropy."
"I am a proud Canadian, and I am grateful to Canada's Walk of Fame and the Slaight Foundation for this award," said Drake in a press release issued Tuesday, Aug. 16.
Peter Soumalias, Founding Director of Canada's Walk of Fame, saluted the platinum-selling rapper and his enviable career that, only a couple years in, has already amassed two Junos and six Grammy nominations while moving over a million copies in the U.S.
"At 24 years of age, Drake has already achieved what has taken others a lifetime to do," he said. "He is kind, smart, talented, philanthropic and driven. He is an inspiring example to all, and we are proud to recognize him this year as our young Canadian making a positive impact."
The Allan Slaight award comes with a $10,000 honorarium which the former 'Degrassi: The Next Generation' star plans to donate to Dixon Hall, an organization aimed at helping low-income neighborhoods of his hometown of Toronto. The details of the ceremony are still TBD.
"Drake is a true Canadian ambassador who continues to prove that with hard work, dreams can become reality," said Gary Slaight, President and CEO, Slaight Communications.
Makes you wonder if Peter Soumalis and Gary Slaight will be rocking out to Drake's newest cuts when his hotly anticipated new disc, 'Take Care,' drops in Oct. We know we will be.
