A quick listen reveals a slick, airy R&B record -- the complete opposite of what the Roc Nation signee had initially discussed in interviews.
"I really wanted it to be a rock-infused album," Kelly told Vibe.com earlier this week. "Very hard and dark, it had to deal with the kind of person I was at the time. I was going through a lot with my career, and I was going on tour. I was in a relationship and it fell apart, so I was going through a lot and wanted to express my anger and frustration with the whole thing through an album."
Luckily, the New York singer did some growing up, and after touring with Jay-Z as Alicia Keys' stand-in on 'Empire State of Mind,' she finally found her own artistic voice.
While 'Every Girl' might not be the sonically "hard and dark" record Kelly originally envisioned, the songs are far from light and fluffy. On 'White Lies,' she commits soulful perjury, explaining to a judge that she murdered her cheating boyfriend and his lover by mistake, because she thought they were intruders -- Never mind that she reloaded. On 'In the Morning' -- not be confused with fellow Roc Nation signee J. Cole's track of the same name -- she explains why she needs booze to share her true feelings.
"I love him, but I can only say it when I'm drunk," she sings. "I'll deny it in the morning."
"I think the hardest part is just figuring out who you are and how much you're going to put yourself into your craft," Kelly told Vibe. "How much of yourself you're going to give to the world to be successful."
Earlier this week, The BoomBox debuted a track off the EP titled 'Seek & Destroy,' written by The-Dream. Download Bridget's 'Every Girl' EP here.
