Jennifer Hudson: 'Precious' Movie Role Was Initially Hers

Singer Jennifer Hudson is dropping some interesting news that deals with one of 2009's most talked about dramatic films, 'Precious.'

Directed by Lee Daniels and starring Mariah Carey, the film centered on actress Gabourey Sidibe, who played lead character Precious. In Hudson's upcoming book, 'I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down,' which debuts in Jan. 2012, the 'If This Isn't Love' songstress claims that she was initially tapped for the role, despite Daniels previously stating in interviews that he searched high and low for Sidibe, the perfect person for the role.

However, Hudson passed because she was required to put on weight, a struggle she endured since first entering the music industry during her 'American Idol' days. "I had done that with Effie ['Dreamgirls']... and as much as I was moved by this film. I wanted to try a role that had nothing whatsoever to do with my weight," she reveals.

She was reportedly tapped to play Precious as she was wrapping up her acting spot in 'Dreamgirls.' Though she passed on that position, Hudson went on to star in 'Sex and the City' as character Louise, who was the assistant to Carrie -- played by Sarah Jessica Parker.

It was a ghetto movie or so many stereo type for Blacks...especially Black women....it was an ok movie, but it was Ghetto...and not representing educated Blacks women.....

Black women are always portrayed as uneducated, DRAMA queens, and anything else negative....it's time to STOP this......

Gaby, is still playing the Aunt Jamama roles...and this is what society want the world to remember Black Women...

they do not have roles that is marketed with Black women showing intelligent....classy sexy or good people.....

This movie was way over praised overall. Gaby did a great job and im glad for her success but when i saw the movie i said monique deserved all the recogintion ,at that time Gaby was getting it. This was before awards time! Monique was truly disgusting in that role and that perfomance was fab! But the whole movie overall wasnt that good and Mariah was a bit over praised her role wasnt that hard and they made her look ugly so thats why she got praised.. I believe Jen would have been offered the role and she could have played it but its best for all she didnt..And lets face it she was big in the DG but no where the size of Gaby!! So she would have had to put on alot more weight and with her struggles at that time I dont blame her for not doing it..Remember she hadnt lost it at that point so weight was stilla big problem and gaining 50 or ahundred more would have been to much for her..

Jennifer Hudson looks WONDERFUL. She looks healthy, and has kept her curves. In addition, she's got a POWERFUL singing voice, and while I don't think she's the "best" actress out there, she certainly has talent that goes beyond how well she sings. I'm don't think she would have been the best choice for "Precious," for many reasons...but she's doing JUST fine in her career. Whatever you're doing, Jennifer, keep doing it. You look beautiful, and you sound beautiful.

I'm a bit puzzled as to how SHE could have played Precious when Precious is a young girl of about 14-17. No way could Jennifer play a teenager. She was great as Effie and even there she was matronly and played a mother. When I first read the headlines I thought she was tapped to play the role that Monique took===the mother of Precious.

Wow, I'm amazed at the negative, mean and racist remarks. Only Jennifer knows how hard she worked to lose her weight. She shouldn't be castigated for not wanting to gain weight for a role. "Gaining weight should not be an issue??" And what if she had tried and tried to quit smoking and was finally successful, but then was required to smoke for a role? You keep doing what you know is right for you Jennifer and bravo to you for all you have accomplished.
