Doing It Wrong: Sophomore Album Covers That Missed the Mark

Nicki Minaj has been in her pop groove for quite some time now. While few of us doubt her lyrical abilities, we've been left scratching our heads at some of her extreme, attention-grabbing antics. Still, Minaj has managed some major placements after the release of a single album: performances at the Grammys and the Super Bowl, countless ad campaigns from OPI, MAC and now Pepsi. As she prepares to release her second album on April 3, the pressure is on to see if she can outdo her debut LP, 'Pink Friday,' or fall into the sophomore slump like so many others.

We would like to think the album artwork plays a role in the reception of the project since it's one of the few details we see before the release. After viewing the Queens MC's 'Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded' cover, disappointment comes to mind. The 29-year-old entertainer dove even deeper into an abstract universe -- her hair perfectly coiffed and platinum blonde, her body splattered in bright paint colors -- however, the product doesn't live up to its name. With a title like that, there should be some kind of a visual warning to her competition rather than the neon-colored pop fare she delivered. Minaj's questionable album art inspired us to look at 10 other artists with disappointing sophomore album covers. While these rappers and R&B artists had some great music the second time around, their album covers suffered a slump on their own.
